    MH-SpEd Training

Billing with a Purpose: A Workshop for School Social Workers on Implementing Medicaid Reimbursement in MH-SpEd Services

This two-day interactive workshop is designed specifically for school social workers working at the intersection of mental health and special education (MH-SpEd).

Participants will gain a clear understanding of Medicaid third-party billing practices and how to ethically document and bill for services while maintaining a student-centered approach.

With a focus on compliance, clinical integrity, and sustainability, this training equips social workers with the knowledge and tools to align service delivery with reimbursement processes—ultimately strengthening support for students and increasing access to resources.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Learn to write accurate and compliant documentation for billing through a special education due process lens, ensuring alignment with IEP goals, service minutes, and legally mandated supports.

    2. Develop skills to document clinical service delivery for Medicaid reimbursement, using language and practices that reflect medical necessity, clinical intervention, and ethical standards.

    3. Explore how to implement a sustainable MH-SpEd model within a school district, integrating mental health services with special education systems, staffing structures, and billing processes.

    4. Identify and apply evidence-based mental health interventions that align with both educational and clinical frameworks, supporting effective service delivery and billing justification.

    When: August 11th & 12th, 2025

    Where: Valley View Education Center

    11840 Valley View Rd

    Eden Prairie, MN

Times:  7:15am - 4:00pm (approx time on both days)

CEUs: 11.5 (This number may change as the schedule is still being finalized.)

Participants should come ready with access to the necessary areas within their documentation platform for this training.

If possible, please have a sample student that would allow you to navigate your system in real time, explore required fields, and practice implementing documentation and billing procedures.

Registration closes on July 7, 2025 at 5pm.

Maximum of 200 participants. No exceptions.
If we hit max capacity before the July 7th date, registration will be closed.

More information will be sent for those attending as the training approaches.

**Please note: Hotel accommodations and meals will not be provided as part of this training. Participants are encouraged to plan accordingly for lodging and food during the two-day workshop.

    Keynote speakers

    Monday:  Dr. Lori Desautels

Our Journey Through the Developing Nervous System as

We Rewire Our Perceptions of Discipline

In this presentation, we will explore how our nervous systems are impacted by adversity, trauma, and experiences of resiliency through deepened connections and sensory regulation.

Behaviors are only signals or indicators that the brain and body are struggling in survival states of functioning. In our time together, we will explore how we get out in front of the behavior through our procedures, routines, and transitions.

We will begin to share practices that reach the nervous system integrating steadiness and play. We will also explore the differences between co-regulation and coercive regulation which is the foundation of discipline practices that move us through challenging moments while attending to our emotional, social, and physiological health.

    Tuesday:  Dr. Clay Cook

     Low-Burden, High-Impact Mental Health Services

In this keynote, we will explore the critical importance of selecting mental health practices that are both low-burden and high-impact, ensuring that they are practical for implementation while yielding significant benefits.

We'll discuss how high-burden practices, despite their potential effectiveness, often prove too cumbersome for consistent application, while low-impact practices fail to deliver a meaningful return on investment. Attendees will learn how to strategically choose and implement low-burden, high-impact practices within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS), with a focus on tangible, actionable strategies at each tier.

This session will empower participants to optimize mental health services in their schools or organizations, resulting in better outcomes for both students and staff.
